Éire
Óg bridged a lengthy gap of years with no success at adult level with a resounding 4-11 to 2-01 win over Feakle
on Saturday evening. Freetaker, Claire McMahon made no mistakes when she
stepped up to take a ’45 after Feakles Muirne Donnellan put Orla Devitts shot
on goal out over the line. McMahon put her side three points up after five
minutes of play with two pointed frees.
However, this lead was wiped out when Vera Loughnane raced through the Éire Óg
defence to score a cracking goal. Two Orla Devitt points put the Ennis side two points in the clear
until a lovely point from Feakle pulled the advantage back to the minimum. Éire
Óg finished the half strongly as a
pointed ’45 from McMahon and an unstoppable goal from Devitt gave them a 5
point lead at the interval.
Both sides stepped up a gear in the second
half. Feakle attacked from the throw in and were unfortunate to put two shots
wide of the mark in the opening minutes. The Ennis girls made no mistakes and
once again McMahon opened the scoring with a pointed ’45. Devitt found the
Feakle net to score her second goal of the match. An outstanding sideline cut
from Feakles Mary Kate Moloney spun
off Katie Malone’s hurley to register
Feakles second goal. The tide turned completely in Éire Ógs favour with the
introduction of subs Aoife Sheehan and Shauna Keane and the switch of Claire
McMahon wing back. Orla Devitt completed a hat trick of goals and tacked on a
pointed free. Orla McMahon and hardworking mid-fielder, Alana O’Brien added
points to the tally, while Shaunagh O’Brien added a goal to put Éire Óg firmly
in the driving seat. The match concluded, as it started, with a pointed ’45
from McMahon. The final whistle signalled heartbreak and bitter disappointment
for the east Clare side and unrestrained joy for the “townies” as they headed
back to Clonroadmore in possession of the long sought after Junior A shield. It is worth noting that for Ruth Lillis, Sally Wall, Sally Wynne, Sinead Darcy, Bláthin Casey,Orla McMahon, Shauna Keane & Tara Sheehan, this is their first taste of success despite having played with the club from under 12.
